Co-extruded WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) decking

The co-extrusion technology uses two or more extruders feeding a special die simultaneously – the main extruder pushes the core mixture, while the auxiliary extruder wraps a high-performance polymer around the core. At temperatures exceeding 180°C, the two layers fuse at the molecular level without any adhesives or toxic glues. The outer protective layer will not physically delaminate or peel under normal environmental stress. Co-extruded WPC is widely recognized as the third-generation outdoor WPC decking, representing the current industry benchmark.

Its core structure consists of two parts:

Inner core (approx. 90%-95% by weight): Composed of 60% -certified recycled hardwood fiber, 30% high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and 10% chemical additives. The wood fiber provides rigidity and tensile strength, preventing the boards from sagging between joists; HDPE offers flexibility and impact resistance.
Outer protective layer (approx. 0.5mm-1.0mm thick): Made of engineering-grade polymer, containing no wood fiber, and loaded with hindered amine light stabilizers, UV absorbers, and antioxidants, forming a dense molecular-level biological barrier. Common cladding materials include ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) and high-performance HDPE modified compounds.

Installation Key Points & Precautions

Joist spacing:

The center-to-center distance of joists for WPC decking should generally not exceed 35cm. For hollow decking, wall thickness must also be considered, as joist spacing directly affects load performance. Always follow the manufacturer's specifications.
Accessories: 

Use dedicated WPC joists, stainless steel clips and stainless steel expansion screws. Stainless steel screws are durable and the first choice for fixing WPC profiles, effectively avoiding rust and corrosion.
Expansion gaps:

Use dedicated clips that naturally maintain 2-5mm gaps to allow for thermal expansion and contraction.
Base requirements: The installation base must be level and flat. Fasteners must be stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized to prevent rust damage and ensure long-term stability.
Joist material selection:

Solid decking is suitable for steel joists, while hollow decking works well with WPC joists. Regardless of material, the optimum joist spacing is between 30cm and 40cm.
